(Positive Family Craft)
Recently on our podcast, we challenged you to make a family tradition that matters. We personally decided to make a new one. Most family traditions are yearly, but this one is a new nightly ritual that we love. This up-cycled craft is a twist on the popular “warm fuzzies jar.” Instead of being a positive reinforcement jar for good behavior however, a Sunshine Jar is a nightly positive conversation starter. Here’s how we did it:
(Note: Small parts are a choking hazard to young children. Always use adult supervision)
Small Canning Jar or other container, Craft Pom Poms, Markers, Hot Glue (Optional), Paint (Optional), Twine (Optional), Small Basket (Optional), Scrap Cloth (Optional)
Get an old mason jar or other container
Step 2 (Optional)
Paint the bottom and let it dry.
Step 3 (Optional)
Grab some scrap cloth and hot glue it to the lid. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
Step 4 (Optional)
When dry, tie some some twine around the outside of the jar. We like having these levels of decoration because it helps us see progress as we fill the jar with our “sunshine drops.”
Get some small pompoms or other colored items. Glue them to a piece of cardboard with different conversation topics. We chose to do:
- “I helped” (Share a time that you served someone today)
- “I’m grateful” (Share something you are thankful for today)
- “I did it!” (Share something you succeeded at today)
- “They helped” (Share something someone else did to help you)
- “They did it” (Share something someone else succeeded at)
Start a ritual. We chose to do ours after everyone is ready for bed and in their PJs. We choose one pompom from a small basket, share our answer to the color we chose, then place it in our Sunshine Jar.
Fill your life with positive sunshine! Create a family culture of positivity and gratitude as you place sunshine drops into the jar each night. (Optional) Go on a fun outing or have a yummy treat together when your jar is full.
Have you made a Sunshine Jar? Tell us about it in the comments or share with us on social media!
