Date Your Spouse for Free!
Committing to weekly dates with your spouse is one of the best ways to stay connected. You can hear your piggy bank cracking already right? Well don’t get the hammer out yet. There are plenty of ways to have meaningful and intentional dates without breaking the bank (or piggy bank for that matter). Check out these 15 absolutely free date night ideas, and comment below with your own ideas!
1. GO FOR A WALK
Going for a walk together it always a great use of time. Make it even more intentional by having a specific goal like finding 5 things that you love about homes in your neighborhood.
2. WRITE IN YOUR JOURNALS
Vulnerability and family history are two things we refer to often when talking about strong relationships. Here’s a great way to combine both. Write in your separate journals and then share. You could also take the time to read through childhood journals together and really get to know each other.
3. TAKE A DOG FOR A WALK
You don’t have to have your own fur baby to make this one happen. Volunteer to walk a neighbor’s or check out options such as humane societies in your local area.
4. SKIP ROCKS
This is such a simple activity with so much value. Skipping rocks is both fun and relaxing. It’s also a great way to spend time in deep conversation or enjoying some rare peace and quite.
5. MENTOR DOUBLE DATE
This one is genius. And packed full of wisdom. Ask a couple you admire to go on a double date with you. It can be as formal as an interview or as informal as a fun game night. There are so many things we can learn from other successful couples.
6. DO YOGA
Couple’s yoga, or side by side. Beginner or advanced. One of the great things about yoga is that you can do it no matter where you are, whatever level you are at or how much time you have.
7. REVIEW YOUR WEDDING GUESTBOOK
Dust off your wedding guest book, look through the names of your guests. Talk about your favorite memories with those people (or work really hard to remember who they are in the first place).
8. RECREATE A CHILDHOOD MEMORY
Take your spouse down memory lane. If you live close to where you grew up, you could literally go on a drive re-visiting your stomping grounds. If you don’t, you can still find a look-a-like tree to climb, a playground to hang out at or dust off that old toy or game you still have hanging around for some strange reason.
9. SNOW BALL FIGHT
So this one is technically seasonal. But nothing is stopping you from having a leaf fight, a grass fight or a straight up mud fight.
10. PLAN A VACATION
Notice we said PLAN. This may seem like the most expensive date option out there, but there is nothing wrong with dreaming. Plan out what you would do, where you would want to go, and even write out your dream itineraries. It’s a great way to discover more about your spouse’s wanderlust.
11. BABYSIT TOGETHER
Similar to number 3, this is a great opportunity to combine service and date night. You’ll get to bond while you serve, and another couple gets that much needed time together. There are even several non profits that you could work through such as respite care services for parents who have children with special needs.
12. PLAY HOPSCOTCH
While you could use the professional hoppytaw to play hopscotch, all you really need is a rock and an elementary school play yard.
13. GO ON A HIKE
Hiking in general is a fantastic active date night option. If you decide to hike at night, don’t forget your flashlight and other needful equipment.
14. PLAY MALL BINGO
Make a list of things (or people) you may see at a mall. Head to your local mall and see who can find the most (while not spending a penny).
15. MAKE A TIME CAPSULE
Now that you’ve had all of these great experiences, gather together your evidence (like your vacation plans) and store them away in a box. Add your guesses for what life will look like 5 or 10 years from today and mark your box to be opened again on that particular date (which makes this is a two-for-one date night idea!)
